Digitalization of the power grid promises many advantages for reliability, efficiency and flexibility.
We offer the efficiency to add software-only energy meters, power quality instruments, PMUs, or monitoring systems. Instead of having to install a device for each of those, our digital measurement platform offers the possibility to add those functions as isolated software components. This means that one, off-the-shelf computer, can perform the job of 100 or more traditional meters.
Based on novel anomaly detection algorithms, the Swedish power grid and Sinusoidal Systems have developed a system that can be used for fast and easy addition of all kind of anomaly detections. Engineers at the Swedish power grid that come up with a new data analysis idea can with a few lines of software add an isolated software component to the platform. This allows reliability innovation at the heart of the grid.
A first system was put to trial in early 2024. In the upcoming, fully digital, new substations, the measurement platform offer a flexible solution to increase predictive grid maintenance and efficient replacement of hardware devices.

Digital Measurement Platform
The digital measurement platform is connected to digital datastreams as defined by IEC-61850. It offers a virtualization solution for applications that use the data of such streams. Energy meters and power quality meters are examples of such applications.
Isolation of the software components allows the ability to safely and securely add user applications to the platform that can perform edge computations on the fine-grained data streams of the substation.
With the accurate standard sampling of IEC-61850 the measurement platform receives data streams that can be used to detect anomalies such as a failing CVTs in the power grid. Via a simple programming interface, teams can swiftly add their own specific analysis algorithms to monitor the grid and components health.

RISE and Svenska kraftnät explain the importance of measuring and monitoring the electricity net with more than just energy meters.
"With continuous monitoring, we can identify errors when they occur, errors that could otherwise go unnoticed until a physical inspection, up to six years later", says Niklas Eriksson, senior researcher at RISE.
